Do the people in your organization have what they need to do their best work?

The good news is that more and more people are engaging in conversations about diversity, equity and inclusion - and not just people but companies, organizations and institutions.

More and more organizations are in agreement that a DEI approach is necessary, needed and the right thing to do.

However, good intentions don’t automatically translate into results.

And a “check the box” approach to DEI is likely to get limited results at best.

DEI isn’t a speciality or silo that you can add on to your organization - it’s a lens that needs to be tied into overall strategic goals and objectives, and overlaid and integrated into every aspect of what your organization does, both internally and externally, in order to achieve the ultimate goal.

What is the ultimate goal?

The ultimate goal is to create the conditions so that everyone has what they need to do their best work and live their most fulfilling lives.

What’s it going to take?

It's going to take an honest assessment of where an organization is - what's working and what isn't working? Where is bias showing up, however unintentionally? Who doesn't feel valued or seen because of their background and identity? How is the culture helping people do their best work and where is it getting in the way?

It’s going to take open conversations about things that have traditionally been out of bounds for conversations in the workplace - conversations about racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, classism, elitism and all the forms of bias and systemic oppression that create often debilitating and intergenerational obstacles for some more than others.

It's going to take a willingness to hold ourselves and each other accountable for articulating a vision that shifts culture and drives equity.

And it's going to take a commitment to follow through at the institutional as well as individual level by designing and implementing policies, procedures, behaviors, practices and an organizational culture that increase impact, fosters inclusion and benefits all of us.
