Now is not the time to go into "surveillance" mode
It's amazing to me how humans hate change, and yet when we are absolutely forced to, we can adapt and be resilient. The pace of change as we respond to the pandemic here in NYC has been mind blowing.
And yet here we are, adjusting.
Different companies and organizations are reacting in different ways but what I am seeing is that now is not the time to go into "surveillance" mode in trying to track when employees are working and what they are working on.
Not only is it INHUMANE during a crisis of this scale, but it is going to hurt the organizations that do this in the long run.
It's also not going to create "productivity" - it is going to create stress, not to mention reduce morale and engagement which ultimately has a negative effect on the productivity that these organizations are so worried about.
Offering grace and flexibility, letting go of "how things have always been done" and being open to and encouraging creativity and innovation is going to be key to how we come out of this.
Yes work still needs to be done, but being flexible about how and when will mean that more work and better work will get done, now and in the future.
